Some may have gotten the mistaken idea that the Fasci/European Empire was defeated.

Prior to WWII fascism was a wildly popular movement in Britain. When the Hitler declared war against competing fascisms, Britain was one of his targets. Fascism was less popular but a growing influence in the U.S.. The military complex may have been defeated but much of the ideology that went underground in Britain and the U.S. during the war years has in the post WWII era slowly leavened the whole lump. Curtailing and jailing for proclaiming the truth is just a symptom of a much more insidious disease.
